AUSTRIA’S LAKE DISTRICTS Early Bird Booking: (book by Dec. 31) Air is not included (rates available) Some of the most spectacular scenery and some of the most delightful walking can be found in Austria’s Lake Districts. Both the Salzkammergut and Worthersee offer magnificent panoramas of mountains, lakes and enchanting villages. Our walking schedule is a very low impact program with mainly classic lakeside walks. Our resort style hotels offer a wide range of amenities from saunas, steam baths to fitness solariums. During our strolls we’ll get to enjoy visits to Salt Mines, Funiculars, Cog Rail and Lake Steamers. Scheduled to enjoy the reliable summer weather plus the long summer days this tour will allow plenty of time for lakeside swimming and lounging as well as visits to idyllic villages and small towns. To round off our tour we bracket the lakes with an arrival day in the beautiful medieval city of Salzburg, home to Mozart, then end our program with always popular Venice. ITINERARY Day 1 July 6 11:00am pick-up at Munich’s International Airport with transfer to Salzburg. Remaining afternoon at leisure in Salzburg. This evening get acquainted cocktails before dinner at our hotel. Day 2 July 7 Morning tour of Salzburg followed by afternoon transfer to Traunkirchen in the Salzkammergut. This afternoon we settle into our lakeside resort that will be home for the next four nights. Dinner will be overlooking the lake. Day 3, July 8 An easy morning walk that follows the River Traun through bucolic meadows, this river was the salt pipeline from the Hallstatt salt mines. Lunch time will find us in the small town of Ebensee which is great fun to explore. In the afternoon we’ll take the cable car up the mountain for glorious views followed by a return to Traunkirchen by lake boat. Day 4, July 9 We start today with a visit to the famous salt mines of Hallstatt. A cog railway takes us to the entrance of the mine at which point we enter the mine by way of a small train and then by ‘riding’ a wooden chute down into the massive chambers. Following our mine visit we join the old salt path above the Hallstattersee, a beautiful trek that drops down into the valley and our eventual destination of Bad Goisern. Day 5, July 10 Today we enjoy one of the most famous walks in the Salzkammergut with breathtaking views. We start with an easy lakeshore walk around the Vorderer Gosausee then gradually climb up to a second mountain lake with continuous views across the valleys and mountains. Our return takes us around the opposite side of Vorderer Gosausee and back to our starting point. Day 6, July 11 Today we depart the Salzkammergut and head further south toward the Worthersee close to the Serbian border. Our resort destination is on the shore of Osslacher See by the spa town of Portschach. This afternoon is at leisure to discover the small town and maybe enjoy the extraordinary warm waters of the lake. The resort boasts eleven outdoor tennis courts and an eighteen hole golf course. Day 7, July 12 The delightfully rolling hills of the south slope of the Worthersee is our walking destination today. This easy ramble takes us through small villages and farmland with a backdrop of mountains and lakes. Our walks in this area will be in the mornings as the afternoon sun can get quite warm and the lakeside pleasures will beckon. Day 8, July 13 A wooded trail from our hotel takes us above the lake and through hillside farm holdings. Local farmers will be scything the rich grass and drying it on posts in age old tradition. After a number of small villages the trail meanders back to the lake and following lunch we take the lake steamer back to Portschach. Day 9, July 14 This morning we depart for Venice with a midday arrival. Our hotel is situated close to St. Mark’s Square and we’ll have time to explore the center of this magnificent city. Dinner this evening is al fresco close to the famous Rialto Bridge. Day 10, July 15 Today we depart for Venice International Airport for your return to the States or for your continuing travels in Europe.
