ITALIAN COOKING TOUR September 28 – October 5, 2010 8 days Air is not included (rates available) Staying in the fabulous locations of the Portofino Coast and Chianti. We are going to enjoy a truly Italian experience. You’ll get cooking instruction from top chefs of each area, visit the markets with the cooks, meet wine connoisseurs and prepare your own dinner parties. We’ve chosen two areas, both famous for their culinary delights – the Italian Riviera (Liguria) naturally leaning toward food from the sea but also famous for its amazing Pesto’s and Funghi (mushroom) dishes. The Chianti region of Tuscany offers a wealth of foods with Pasta, Cinghiale (wild boar) and Zuppas (soups) among its most famous. There is so much to see that we ‘cook’ for half the day and then become ‘tourists’. We include visits to the Cinque Terre, Florence, San Gimignano and some beautiful country back road touring. This is a great opportunity to meet the Italian people ‘where they live’ – in their kitchens. ITINERARY Day 1 Sep. 28 12 Noon pick-up at Milan’s Malpensa International Airport. Transfer to Camogli and the Portofino Coast. Afternoon at leisure before welcome cocktails and dinner at our superb hotel overlooking the Mediterranean. Day 2 Sep. 29 Morning in the kitchen of the famous Cenobio restaurant with head Chef Romeo. You will be preparing three dishes with the aid of the Sous and Pastry chefs. After the morning preparations lunch in the restaurant. This afternoon an excursion to the Cinque Terre. Day 3 Sep. 30 Another morning with Chef Romeo and his team. Again lunch in the restaurant. This afternoon a visit to Santa Margherita and short boat ride to world famous Portofino harbor. Day 4 Oct. 1 Today we depart for Tuscany and the Chianti town of Greve. Our morning ride through Liguria and onto Tuscany allows for a quick visit to Pisa. This afternoon we settle into our second hotel in the old, historic town centre. Later in the afternoon we meet Rosella, chef and owner of one of the great Chianti restaurants. With a customary glass of Chianti Classico the instruction begins. You’ll be preparing fresh local products which could be anything from Tuscan Bread soup to Wild Boar. This evening dinner will be in the restaurant overlooking the town square. Day 5 Oct. 2 Today it’s Saturday market in Greve and Rosella will introduce you to some of the products on the stalls and the stallholders . Another morning of cooking instruction followed by lunch. This afternoon we visit a local wine maker at his villa and visit the fabulous gardens before a wine tasting of his award winning Chiantis. Day 6 Oct. 3 This morning is at leisure and those interested in a walk through the vineyards can join Steve on a very low impact walk across the Tuscan landscape. This afternoon we take a drive to the lovely old medieval town of San Gimignano, a great place to pick up some gifts and enjoy the best gilato. This evening we visit a famous Palazzio for another wine tasting followed by a feast in the Grand Hall of the Palace. Day 7 Oct. 4 This morning is our final cooking session with Rosella. Our lunch is a fun affair with special wines and an award ceremony. Following the festivities we spend the afternoon in Florence and a final chance to pick up some mementos. This evening we relax back in Greve. Day 8 Oct. 5 Our final breakfast together before we head for either Florence International Airport or back to Milan’s Malpensa International Airport. WHAT TO EXPECT: End of summer warm days. This is a cooking program so not surprisingly you will be eating some of the best food each region has to offer. Better still is that you will be preparing some of the meals yourselves. The hotels are some of our favorites - a glorious four star resort hotel on the Portofino coast and a lovely first class family run country hotel in the Chianti region. Transportation is by small nine seat, air conditioned vans. COOKING: There will be five half days of instruction in the kitchens. There also will be visits to wineries of the region with input from the vintners themselves. In between the cooking (and eating) we have side trips out to to some of the popular tourist spots including Florence and San Gimignano. For those who might like to walk there are a couple of opportunities to join Steve in walking off some of the earlier intake. YOUR TOUR INCLUDES: All first class accommodations based on twin occupancy (single supplements available); breakfasts and daily dinners or lunches including wine; air conditioned van transportation with driver/guide; entries as per itinerary; airport transfers; taxes and tips.
