Three astounding areas, all part of the Italian Mediterranean, are visited on this very low impact Walk & Tour.  Cooling Mediterranean breezes allow us cooler morning walks with afternoons relaxing in the resort villages.  We start at Santa Margherita (Portofino) then make our way down to Portovenere (Cinque Terre) and then Portoferraio (Elba).  Each area has its own unique highlights and we use numerous types of transportation during the trip - vans, rail, boats, funicular and gondolas.  The harbor towns vary from wealthy jet-setting Portofino, the very Italian Portovenere and the relaxed, laid back Portoferraio and along the way we visit numerous villages and harbors, all of which are stunning.

ITINERARY

Day  1   Jun. 12   Mid morning pick up at Milan’s Malpensa International Airport.  Transfer to Santa Margherita on the Portofino Coast.  Remainder of afternoon at leisure.  Welcome drinks and dinner at our hotel.

Day  2   Jun. 13   A short boat ride into Portofino harbor.  After a short visit we walk out of the village on a coastal trail and into the Portofino hills before dropping down to the beach at San Fruttuoso.  The local excursion ‘vaporetto’ boat returns us to Santa Margherita.  Dinner this evening in the lovely fishing harbor of Camogli.

Day  3   Jun. 14   This morning we depart for the Cinque Terre.  Our next three nights are at Portovenere.  En route we visit an historic hill top town with expansive views of the Ligurian countryside.  The remainder of the afternoon is left at your leisure to explore Portovenere,  Dinner this evening at our hotel.

Day  4   Jun. 15   We drive to the start of our walk at Riomaggiore.  Today we walk four of the ‘five villages’.  At each village you can opt to take the train.  At Venazza we return to Portovenere by boat.  Dinner this evening in Portovenere.

Day  5   Jun. 16    One of our favorite walks is from the small village of Camiglia. The trail takes us through cool pine forests and hilltop trails before descending back to the coastline.  The views are terrific and the scenery changes from forest, to coast  to terraced vineyards clinging to the steep hills.  Lunch is at a small restaurant in Riomaggiore.

Day  6   Jun. 17   Once again we head south along the Ligurian coast.  Boarding a car ferry we make the short crossing to the Island of Elba, famously linked to Napoleon.  On arrival at Portoferraio we cross  over the centre of the small island to the resort village of Porto Azzuro.  Dinner at our hotel overlooking the Mediterranean.

Day  7   Jun. 18    First we visit the Etruscan hill town of  Capiloveri before setting out on our walk along a high ridge that gradually drops down to the valley floor and eventually the seashore.  This afternoon we visit the historic mining village of Rio nell’Elba, listed as a World Heritage site.  Dinner at your leisure this evening.

Day  8   Jun. 19   It’s market day today in Porto Azzura and the first part of the morning we’ll visit the stalls and enjoy the normal Saturday market bustle.  Later we’ll drive across the island to Marciana Marina and include a short walk.  Following lunch we head across to Portoferraio and visit the fortified Palace that housed Napoleon and spend the afternoon wandering this lovely town and harbor.  Dinner this evening is once again at our hotel.

Day  9   Jun. 20    This morning we depart Elba for the mainland with transfer to either Pisa International Airport or Rome’s Da Vinci International Airport.
